“Kim Yong-hyun attempted to take his own life in a detention center in eastern Seoul, where he is held on charges of insurrection related to the investigation of the previously declared state of emergency,” the report states.
The agency notes that this information was provided to parliament by a representative of the correctional facility during parliamentary hearings.
It is worth mentioning that President Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency in South Korea on December 3. It was in effect for several hours before being swiftly blocked by parliament. Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun resigned, and he was arrested on December 8. The South Korean parliament was unable to impeach the president; however, members of the ruling party believe that the president's resignation is inevitable.
The president of South Korea has been declared a suspect and is prohibited from leaving the country. Earlier, searches were conducted in his administration.
