The Space Research and Technology Agency ("Uzbekkosmos") has identified 1,928 illegal landfills for solid domestic waste through space monitoring since the beginning of the year, reported the agency's press service.
The total area of these landfills amounted to 720.7 hectares. In 123 cases, there were violations of the boundaries of existing landfills covering an area of 255.5 hectares, while the remaining 1,805 sites, with a total area of 465.2 hectares, are classified as separate unauthorized dumps.
The highest number of violations was found in Tashkent region, with 363 illegal landfills covering a total area of 98.6 hectares. The second place was taken by Karakalpakstan, which has 243 sites occupying 63.2 hectares.
The largest total area occupied by landfills was recorded in Navoi region, totaling 112.4 hectares (15.6% of the overall total) and 216 sites. Significant areas are also occupied by illegal landfills in Bukhara (92 sites, 91.7 hectares) and Kashkadarya (81 sites, 79.3 hectares).
