Timur Ishmetov has been appointed as the Chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan. The Senate approved Ishmetov's candidacy, which was proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, reports Daryo.uz.
Previously, Ishmetov served as the First Deputy Advisor to the President on economic development, investment, and foreign trade policy. His predecessor as head of the Central Bank, Mamarizo Nurmuratov, has been relieved of his duties.
Ishmetov was born in 1979 in Tashkent. He holds degrees in finance and law, having graduated from the Tashkent Financial Institute, the University of Birmingham (master's degree in international finance and banking), and the Tashkent State University of Law. Before his current appointment, he worked in various leadership roles within Uzbekistan's regulatory body, led key departments, and held positions as First Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister of Finance. Since December 2022, he has been serving as the First Deputy Advisor to the President.
The Chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan heads the Central Bank's Board, the executive office, the consumer protection service for banking services, the legal department, and the credit committee. The appointment and dismissal of the Chairman of the Central Bank are carried out by the Senate upon the President's recommendation.
